CADFanatic’s Tips & Tricks Tuesday – Customized Workspaces

9 December 2008 11 Comments

Do you work with widescreen monitors?  Dual monitors?  Have a laptop that is sometimes connected to an external widescreen monitor?  SolidWorks 2009 introduces a Workspace command to help arrange your Workspace for multiple setups.  The command has settings for Default, Widescreen, or Dual Monitor.

The different options have alternate settings for positions of certain task panes, such as the PropertyManager.  Unfortunately, users are currently unable to save their own customized Workspace; therefore this command is fairly limited right now.  But the framework is there now and hopefully this is a precursor to functionality that will be introduced in the future.

Do you have any special tips or tricks you use to make working with SolidWorks faster or easier?  Email them to us at [email protected] and it may be featured on a future CADFanatic’s Tips & Tricks Tuesday!

  • Sob, I have no 2009, only lowly 2008 SP5. I would love to have an excuse to get IT get me another monitor and take advantage of this Workspace. Or maybe during the next replenishment phase I can get a nice Dell laptop and keep my monitor!.

It does seem that the Workspace is setup for enhancement in SW 2010. Looking forward to using it once I get upgraded and can wrangle another monitor. Maybe I will just buy my own and write it off on taxes?

  • my tip. don't use toolbars :) – I've gotten rid of them save the very top flyout bar. Use the shortcut bar for everything!

  • Right on, you HAVE to just turn stuff off. best choice I made. You adapt
fast and then wonder why it was ever the other way. i think it's an awesome
answer to how Ribbon bars have made people more dependent on the tool and
    menu bars.

  • Yeah, I'm trying the S-key experiment with Ricky (http://www.rickyjordan.com/2008/12/the-s-key-ex…). I am going to have to just turn the Command Manager off to force myself to start relying on the shortcut bar. I will never give up my keyboard shortcuts, though!

  • BRS

I use the shortcut key and I have Macro's and other shortcuts programed into my keyboard. I'm currently trying to convince everyone else in my office to do the same.. but sadly they refuse.. I know I save a lot of time doing this way instead of searching to find something..=)

  • Install the options when they're not looking. then deny doing it. :)
