SolidWorks 2009 SP3 Removes Display State Option?

Back in early December, I posted an article on Display States and Steve Calvert commented about controlling the visibility of new components:

Brian, I use display states and love them except for the fact that when I add a component I have to go back and remove (hide) it from the already created display states. Do you know a way to add a component and only have it show in certain display states?

And I responded:

Steve,

I’m unsure of previous versions, but in 2009 there is an option to “Hide new components” in the Display State Properties PropertyManager tab.

No Options Shown in Display States Dialogue of SolidWorks 2009 SP3Well, after applying Service Pack 3 yesterday to my SolidWorks 2009 x64 install, I happened to want to control the visibility of some new parts in a new Display State that I had created, and the Option dropdown is gone! (Compare the image to the left to the original image from when I commented.)

I surely hope that this is just an oversight! Are other folks seeing this?

Secret SolidWorks Command?

Super Rebuild!Do you know about the “secret” Forced Rebuild command?  I say secret, because there is no menu item for it; it is only accessed by hitting CTRL-Q.  It does everything Rebuild does, and much more!

A Forced Rebuild rebuilds the entire feature tree from the beginning, unlike the regular Rebuild command, which only rebuilds what has changed since the last Rebuild.

Well, John Setzer of Graphics/Systems has a post on their blog, SOLIDNotes, regarding the differences between these two Rebuild commands.  He goes into a lot of detail on how the Rebuild commands walk through the file and what sections of the file are affected by each command.

I will admit that I hardly ever use the regular Rebuild command; CTRL-Q is just ingrained in me now…

So, if you don’t know about CTRL-Q (and I have come across many who do not) or just want to learn more about how the Rebuild commands work, head on over there and check it out!

Changes at CADFanatic!

If you are reading this from the site, you can tell that there have been some major changes around here!  Like several of the other SolidWorks bloggers, I have made the jump and moved my TypePad blog to a WordPress-hosted site.

I want to thank SolidWorks for graciously providing the platform to freely air my missives over the past two years or so and Richard Doyle for getting me involved.  I would also like to thank Patrick Cook and Matthew West for their help and expertise in setting things up and tweaking things here and there.  And thanks to Ricky, Josh, and Matt for their help and suggestions in getting switched over.

Based upon my testing, the RSS feed should remain the same, and all URI’s out there pointing to the old TypePad permalinks should now be redirected to the new WordPress permalinks.  There are still a few issues to work out, such as some images in old posts not showing up all the time, but I will slowly get those links updated.  Also, I have a few issues with the Disqus comments on all previous posts, but hopefully those will be corrected in the coming days.

This is a work in progress, so you will be seeing a few changes from time to time.  I am working on a logo/header, and will probably tweak the CSS colors and whatnot some, if not change to an entirely new theme altogether.

If you notice anything out of whack other than the issues I mentioned above, or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Also, please note that due to the upcoming holidays and getting the new site up and running, CADFanatic’s Tips & Tricks Tuesdays will return after the first of the year, on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.

I’m looking forward to the new site and the new year!  And thanks for reading!
